Cardinal Justin Rigali released the following statement on the death of Officer Cassidy:
"I was so sorry to learn of the death of Officer Cassidy.
I extend my condolences to his family upon the death of their beloved husband, son and father.
I join with the entire community in a feeling of closeness to the Cassidy family during this tragedy and offer my sympathy and prayerful solidarity.
Praying with the Cassidy family on the day of the shooting it was clear that the support of so many police officers, family, friends and even strangers meant a great deal to them at this time of unimaginable pain.
I wish as well to extend my sympathy to the men and women of the Philadelphia Police Department who are also experiencing deep loss. Every day these officers go to work they put their lives at risk to keep all of us safe. I hope and pray for an end to the senseless violence plaguing the city of Philadelphia. The lack of regard for human life plays out tragically on city streets each day. I urge all people of good will to join me in working for an end to violence."
