New Jersey Drivers Feel Pinch At The Pump
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (CBS 3) ―
The sudden jump in gas prices along New Jersey toll roads has some drivers thinking twice about hitting the road.
"Gas was $2.76 yesterday, which we paid to come here and now this morning it was $2.89. It went up $.14 in 12 hours," said vacationer Steve Astrin who traveled to Atlantic City from Long Island.
The prices for a along of gas at stations along the Garden State Parkway, NJ Turnpike and Farleigh Plaza along the Atlantic City Expressway jumped $.14 overnight. Stations on those highways are only allowed to raise prices once a week.
"It's very expensive, it's very expensive, especially with this car," said one motorist driving a Lexus.
One woman drove down to Atlantic City from Rhode Island for a weekend trip and say the gas actually got cheaper the closer she got to New Jersey.
"It's like $3.00 a gallon at home," explained the woman.
Many people feel if the gas prices continue rise, they will have to limit their road travel this summer.
"We won't be able to come as often as we like," said one vacationer walking along the Atlantic City boardwalk.
To try to east the price at the pump, Governor Corzine is wants to test to see if lifting the ban on self-serve gas, which could save motorists $.5 is worth the change. Corzine is also considering reducing the maximum speed limit to 55 m.p.h.
