Holiday Travelers Feeling Pain At The Pump
by Jamie Smith
HAMMONTON, N.J. (CBS 3) ―
It appears $4.00 gas is now a real possibility as the summer driving season nears. Drivers around the area are feeling the pain at the pump with the wallet pinching prices.
While your car may be equipped with a cap, it seems as if gas prices certainly do not have one.
At midnight, toll roads in New Jersey made their weekly price adjustment and prices jumped up 7-cents.
"It is ridiculously expensive right now, it's just hard to even drive around," one driver said.
Drivers hitting the road for the Memorial Day weekend will soon realize record pump prices show no sign of slowing down.
New Jersey is the only state with average prices below $3.00 a gallon. It is cheaper in the Garden State because tax prices are lower and refineries are located in the state.
"You can shop around all you want but you have no choice, you need gas," a frustrated driver said.
The prices at the pump are not what they once were as a fill-up in New Jersey is 30-cents more per gallon than it was 30 days ago.
The government is blaming refinery problems and decreased imports. Experts predict the prices will go higher before any sort of decrease.
Even though it is not comforting to drivers, gas prices only cost a few more cents now than they did last Memorial Day.
New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine, along with 21 other governors, are calling for a Congressional investigation into the prices.
