The Pathmark Black History Month Celebration
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
In an opening event in a proud month, the Pathmark Black History Month Celebration once again brings a day of music and dance to the North Waiting Room at 30th Street Station in Philadelphia. The Friday, February 6 event is free and open to all ages with performances from 11:00am to 4:00pm. The event will showcase Philadelphia's reputation as a city of innovators and a birthplace to world-class performers and artists.
GC Cameron headlines the Celebration in "A Tribute to the Legends of Motown." He is the only lead singer to perform with two of the most famous groups in the world: The Temptations and The Spinners, singing one of that group's all-time favorites "It's a Shame." His Temptations recording of "Can I Get a Witness" was nominated for a Grammy. Today he travels the world to perform live and appear on major recordings, including a new DVD featuring the music of Philadelphia International. This will be promoted and aired widely by PBS. A book on his life, "From the Cotton Fields to Beverly Hills," will soon be available.
The CW-Philly's own Kharisma McIlwaine of the CW Crew will perform an original compositions, accompanying herself at the piano. A Philadelphia native, and just two years out of Cabrini College, her many talents have already built her reputation and a following. Other members of the CW Crew, plus a CBS 3 anchor are expected to join Kharisma on stage at the Celebration.
Marcus Council, a favorite vocalist with Philadelphia audiences, who first gained fame with The Soul Stirrers when he replaced Sam Cooke as lead singer, is back to the Celebration. Performing with him are Diane Brown and other members of First Class, a repertory group that features top Philadelphia singing talents.
Heaven Bound Gospel Singers, a classic gospel quintet known for a cappella vocals, traditional hymns and spirituals, has become a beloved tradition with Celebration audiences. This time they sing out with both the title song of their latest CD and video "Like a Palm Tree" and other singles like "We Worship You" and "Household of Faith."
The Seventh Principle gives everyone in the Celebration audience a chance to move to the drumbeats, calls and music of Africa and the Caribbean. This engaging ensemble, always dressed in colorful traditional costumes, plays authentic instruments and incorporates inspiring athletic leaps and twists into its dances.
