Police Probe Reported Rape Of UPenn Student

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Philadelphia Police are investigating a reported rape at an off-campus party at the University of Pennsylvania.

Police say the alleged rape happened inside an apartment house located in the 4000 block of Walnut Street early Sunday morning.

A 19-year-old Penn student claimed she was raped by a fellow student in a nearby room after leaving the party with him.

"She was with fellow students, she was sexually assaulted while at the party by an individual she had met," Lt. Frank Vanore explained.

Police sources say the alleged rape came to light when the student returned to the party and told friends about the assault. Penn police were immediately notified and partygoers were interviewed.

The alleged assault Saturday is the second allegation of date rape during a fraternity function on the Penn campus in the past two months.

On September 26, a 20-year-old Penn student told police she was raped during a party at the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity house. The district attorney, following an investigation, declined to file charges in this alleged assault.

Based on whatever evidence is recovered from the latest incident, the district attorney will decide if criminal charges are warranted.

"At some point today (Monday) from I am told, a package will be given to the district attorney to review," Lt. Vanore explained.
