Another dead bottlenose dolphin has
been found at the Jersey
Shore.
The Marine
Mammal Stranding
Center in Brigantine confirmed Sunday
that the mammal's carcass was found Saturday night in the Navesink
River, near Victory Park
in Rumson. It was badly decomposed, meaning it probably died months ago.
The discovery comes less than a week after
another dolphin's remains were spotted in the Shrewsbury River.
It's believed both were part of a pod of 16
that spent half of last year in the two rivers, but an official determination
has not been made in either case. If they were part of that group, it would mean
five pod members have died.
The pod has been at the center of a tug of war
between animal rescuers who wanted them removed or coaxed out of the river and back
out to sea, and federal wildlife officials, who decided to leave them alone
unless they appeared to be in imminent danger.
