A Montgomery County community gathered to honor a police dog killed in the line of duty during a pursuit last week.
Over 100 officers attended a memorial service for Andy, a Plymouth Township Police K9, at the Greater Plymouth Community Center Tuesday morning.
Following the service, a procession headed to Bicentennial Park where Andy's ashes were laid to rest.
Andy was accidentally shot and killed by Montgomery Township Police Officer Robert Johnson during a search of suspected bank robbery suspects on October 22.
"When it mattered the most and it matter a whole lot on October 22nd, he did exactly what he needed to be," Officer Louis Layfield said.
The fatal bullet also struck Andy's handler, Officer Layfield, in the chest. The officer escaped serious injury as he was wearing a bulletproof vest.
"I have no malice in my heart towards the other officer that was involved in this, he didn't mean to do this, this was just a bad accident and that's all it was," Officer Layfield said.
Funds from those making donations in Andy's memory will go towards training Plymouth Township police dogs.
