Local Animals In Need Of Help

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Find out how you can help local animals in need.

For information on how to adopt a homeless pet. Click on the following link: www.petfinder.com

To whom it may concern:                               My name is Callie, and you guessed it I am a calico cat.  I am an older cat with special needs.  I am in desperate need for a home.  My mom suddenly died and I am now in a situation where I am boarding, but I only have until the last week of July before I get put down.  I want someone to love me, please.  I have very good friends who care about me but I would be best off in a home that I am the only pet.  I have come a long way, I have been socialized and I am a good companion.  My friend loves me so much that if I can find a good home she would try to support my medical needs (I am diabetic).  I hope this letter gets to Scott Haney so that he might feature me on his show.  My Friend doesn't have a picture but can get one, I just want to share my new found love of people with someone.  If you can please help me you can call my friend Cindy at 965-3744 so we can let people know that I am a purrfect companion.  Please help me so my friend so we can hopefully feature me on TV so I dont have to be put down.    Please, Callie

Help Sprocket!

Sprocket was found a year ago when he was abandoned behind Wal-Mart during a snow storm.  Sprocket is back with me again through no fault of his own. This poor guy can't catch a break. But this time it is an emergency situation. I am searching all of my options, and I literally, have no place for him to go. He is in a very temporary foster home and my next step, which breaks my heart, is to have him put to sleep.  Sprocket is a fabulous dog. He is very smart, very gentle. Loving and cuddly. His favorite game, which will keep him busy for hours, is chasing a flashlight light or laser dot. Sprocket's issue is that he is fearful on a leash. He has been tested by a couple professionals and they are quite sure that he is not aggressive, just fearful.  He desperately needs to be in a home with someone who understands and has dealt with fearful dogs before. I know first hand how scary this trait can seem, but I also know that Sprocket is trainable. I've personally witnessed him change from very fearful on a leash to only slightly fearful in just a month's time. Once he has bonded with a human and feels safe he responds well and quickly.  If anyone knows anyone that might be able to help or make a suggestion please pass this information along.  Please pass and post this message far and wide. I can't bear the thought of putting this guy down. He is two years old, neutered, up-to-date on shots, heartworm negative, micro chipped and has over a year of training under his belt. He does very well with other dogs when he is introduced properly (as long as the other dog(s) don't have similar issues). He does not do well with cats.  As well, Sprocket's current trainer has offered free training to anyone who adopts him. If you or anyone you know might be interested in this guy please call Tanya at (215) 651-7638.

Help Harley!

Please take a look at 7-month-old Harley. Harley cannot use his front legs. He crawls or he compensates by walking upright like a human. Harley's eye was hanging out of his socket but that has been put back in place. We will need to take him for further eye tests to see if damage was done - if he is blind in that eye and if the eye will fall off again. Harley will also need surgery that will cost us between $2000-7000. We need to buy him bionic legs. Please keep him in mind for future fundraising ideas. He is comfortable right now but he will need his surgeries within the next few months. Help us help him visit for more info: www.atailtotell.com

This is Paris.

Paris has been anxiously awaiting her departure at our shelter, but unfortunately, since she is not a Purebreed animal, she cannot find her way to rescue. We desperately need to find her a rescue that will take her immediately and find her the home she deserves. She is about 1-2 years old and she was brought in because her previous owners were moving, a very common excuse.  Another common result of being in the shelter is the pacing back and forth the animal does while in the kennel, a surefire sign of stress. Poor Paris has been exhibiting this behavior for some time so a speedy departure is of the utmost importance. We do not know if Paris is okay with other animals or children, but she has never been aggressive, just curious, as to how in the world did she end up in a place like this. Luckily, she has us to take of her while she is here. Now she needs you. Paris is awaiting adoption as the BSPCA.

Another dog that urgently needs rescue or foster care is Thor.

He is another unfortunate case due to the owner's relocating. But unlike Paris, Thor is a bit older. He is about 12 years old. Something we see way too often in the shelter, but still doesn't make it any easier. Thor is such a loving dog and wouldn't hurt a fly, he is still waiting in his cage barking, to see if his owner's will ever come back to claim him.

We are uncertain if Thor is housetrained, okay with other animals or children. Please come in and see Thor today, you will see just how sad he is and how sad it is to see an older Rotti discarded by his parents.

If your organization can rescue Paris or Thor, please send an email right away to rescuehotline@phillypaws.org. All rescue coordination is done via mobile email. If you call the shelter, the operators may not be able to assist you with the most up to date information regarding the animals in this alert.

If you are interested in fostering Paris or Thor please send an email to fosterhotline@phillypaws.org.

Please use the Foward To a Friend link below to share this alert with friends who may be able to assist!  Please help spread the word about the PhillyPAWS rescue alerts by encouraging other rescues and volunteers to sign up to receive alerts!

If you cannot help the animals described in this email but may be able to help other animals, please contact

rescuehotline@phillypaws.org as soon as possible. The shelter is extremely crowded, and we are asking our friends to do all that you can to help us save lives.

Sally and Sammy's owner sadly passed away.

They are looking for a new home. They are both neutered, current on vaccines, good with dogs, cats and kids. They are house trained, super friendly and playful. They are between 2 and 3 years old. Would like them to stay together.

Please find it in your heart to give these 2 wonderful doggies a loving, forever home : )

This dog needs a home : )

He is a 2-year-old, recently neutered male. He is good with dogs, but will chase cats. He is very well mannered and a typical boxer. He is being fostered by Jasmin. He was hit by a car and his owner wanted to put him to sleep. The doctor informed the owner that he would need to have his right eye removed and the owner did not want a dog with one eye. His surgery was performed on Friday and now has one eye only. Dogs do very well with one eye. If not for Jasmin, this dog would not have a chance to find a forever, loving home. Can someone help?

Barn Homes and Special People Desperately Needed

The Alliance for Philadelphia's Animals is in desperate need of barn homes and stables for shy, frightened cats who, without our intervention, would otherwise be euthanized at shelters. Some of the cats are too unsocialized to be placed in homes. However, while many cannot be handled or picked up, many of these adorable cats are semi-tame and will come up to you for food and even let you pet them. Unfortunately, there are very few special people willing to take them in.

These wonderful cats are purrrfect for controlling the mice in your barn, stable, or shed. The cats are sterilized, vaccinated and tested and will be delivered to your location and acclimated. There is no adoption fee but donations are gratefully appreciated! Please contact phillyferals@animalalliancepa.org if you are interested in adopting one of these great cats.

Former Puppy Mill Pet Needs Surgery

Cynthia Jennings adopted Paris who spent the first three years of life in a small wire cage as a breeding female at a West Virginia puppy mill. No one reportedly noticed when her leg slipped through the wires and became broken. The fracture on her front paw is severe (a non-union fracture) and she needs surgery to correct it and allow it to heal properly. Otherwise, it could break even further and cause further significant damage. It will require invasive surgery, cutting the bone apart, and aligning the two pieces together with a metal plate. The surgery is estimated at a few thousand dollars, that's hoping there are no complications and additional costs! Also, Paris will require about 12 weeks of care for her recuperation. Unfortunately, Jennings does not have the funds to pay for her surgery at this time or time necessary to tend to the dog during her 12 week recuperation period. She will be returned to Rogers' Rescues. The rescue has agreed to get her the medical attention she needs and they have volunteers who will help during her recovery, howeveryour help is needed.

I am asking for donations to help this cuddly pup get the medical attention she needs. The hospital, the doctor, the rescue and I are helping/contributing. I am doing everything possible to help this sweet little dog. She has great potential. She has already become housebroken and has a sweet and gentle demeanor. We only need to fix her little leg. Can you please help?

If you can make a donation, any amount would be great appreciated. Even if it's $5, $15, or $20. Donations must be marked IN CARE OF PARIS in order for them to be set aside for her care. If you can help, please follow directions below.

Send a check or money order made payable to:

Rogers' Rescues – IN CARE OF PARIS
PO Box 28
Red Hill, PA 18076

You can add a note stating the donation is for the surgery/medical care of Paris. Remember, Rogers' Rescues is a 501(c) non-profit organization so all donations are tax deductible. If you would like a receipt for tax purposes, please enclose a self addressed stamped envelope.

Pomeranian With Medical Problems

Pollyanna is about 3.5 years old. She spent the first 3 years of her life in a puppy mill in a cage alone in West VA. with little human interaction. Was there purely for breeding. Her little leg slipped through the wire cage and she suffered a severe break. No one helped her. Eventually she was rescued from the puppy mill. She was spayed and received her shots but no one attended to her leg. I took her myself for medical attention and saw an orthopedic surgeon at the University of PA. They said she should do well with the proper surgery as she is a young dog. And the break still has healed and will not due to the nature of the break. We have volunteers to help with her 12 week recovery and the hospital is offering a discount. The doctor even plans to donate $500 of his teaching funds to her surgery but she needs more money. Is there anyway you can help with this? Maybe putting her on the news to ask for donations? We still need about $1500. I am trying anything as she is a sweet, well behaved little dog who would make a wonderful pet. She is super gentle and very quite. She basically lays on her pillow all day as her leg still hurts her to walk much. Call Cynthia Jennings at (856) 809-9441.

Three Akitas In South Jersey Need Homes

Three Akitas in Carneys Point, Salem County, are in need of foster homes or new permanent homes.

Misha is a 5 year old spayed female looking for a permanent home. She's a wonderful dog, loves to play and have her tummy rubbed! She's a big girl and needs a home with no other pets. She walks well on a leash.

Maximillan is a 6 year old neutered male. He's a loving dog and gets along with cats and dogs. He's a sweetie to deal with, loves car rides and walks well on a leash.

Randy is a neutered male about a 3 to 4 year old. He's a giant teddy bear and loves his cookies. This cutie would be good for a home with no other pets and no small children as he is an active boy. He also walks well on a leash.

If you can help, please contact Kathy of the Akita Rescue at 609-299-9292. Visit www.akitarescuewny.com for more information.

SPCA Dogs Need Temporary Homes

The Pennsylvania SPCA needs your help in finding temporary care for a wonderful, but extremely scared dog named Gracie. She is a 3 year old Shepherd Mix who was originally brought in from PACCA with her pups, who have since been adopted. Without her pups, she has become very depressed and very shy, suffering from a hard case of postpartum, and possible abuse or neglect from past owners. She still has the will to be petted and receive love from us, but she can still be uncertain as to who she can trust. We need to find a dedicated person to help gain her confidence while teaching her she can trust people again.

We also have a very loving, but very emaciated Purebred Female Rottweiler named Sage. She is about 3 years old and has also been with us since Oct. 7, after the previous owner's turned her in after 2 months for being too strong. We were providing her with extra feeding, while she was up for adoption, but she has since developed whipworms, making her losing extra weight. She has also started going around in circles in her cage, making it imperative we find a foster home for her as well. She is housebroken and is trained to sit, but because she is strong she should be be around children 12 years or older.

Both of these dogs are very special to us, very loyal and very loving, but we will not be able to place them up for adoption until they are healthy. Please help us find a temporary home for either dog, and help us find that special home that will give that love in return.

Orphaned Cats Need Homes

A volunteer from the Alliance for Animals received an emergency call from the family of an elderly woman who died on Friday, Dec. 9. This kindhearted woman had been caring for 20-30 cats and the family told the volunteer that they only had one week to remove them from the home. This woman lived alone and all of the cats were rescued by her after being abandoned on the streets of her neighborhood. Some of the cats are very friendly, some are shy or skittish, and a couple are seniors. All are about to lose their home.

If anyone can help one or more of these cats by providing a permanent home, a temporary foster home, or a barn home, please contact Sue Mulloy immediately at 215-886-9903 (home) or 215-842-2000 x4339 (work).

Mom And Pups Need Help

Urgent need for foster care for a family of pit bulls. Mom is a young adult pit bull mix, brindle. She is very friendly to everyone, even when her pups are around, and even when they were newborn. She seems well behaved so far, too. There are 9 pups, and they are 5 weeks old this weekend. They are still nursing, and also eat solid food, about 3 times a day. They can't go outside, and should stay in a confined area—room, exercise pen, something like that. They will need papers that have to be changed a few to several times a day, esp after each meal. Mom should have a way/place to get away from them to rest, and should be let into the yard or walked a normal number of times daily. She should be fed 2-3 meals per day. It's a lot of food and we can help with that. This should be for 3-6 days, with the longer amount of time being just in case we have trouble with transportation.

They have a foster home, but there was an emergency there this morning and so they can't go there yet. The mother and pups should not be around another animal. Mom was good with other dogs before the pups were born, but any mother will get nervous with stranger animals around her babies, so we wouldn't want to risk a confrontation. These can be in a room with the door closed, and other dogs in the house could be put into a separate room long enough to allow Mom to get outside, etc. We will provide instructions, support, etc.

If you can help, please contact Anna Nagy of ROTTnPITy! Rescue at 856-296-6048 or rottnpity@yahoo.com.

Golden Retriever Surgery

Surgery needed for 10 month old Golden Retriever with severe hip dysplasia. Owner cannot afford it and needs donations for surgery.

Chester The Cat

CHESTER is a neutered male with a lot of love to give!!! CHESTER was turned into PACCA as a stray and this long hair orange tabby is skin and bones but otherwise a large cat.

He is 6-10 years old. His age is hard to pin down because he is so malnourished and missing a few teeth. He has yellow eyes and an adorable expression! His face is irresistible.

CHESTER is very shy right now and he is not into dogs or the hustle and bustle at the store. However, he loves to sit on your lap and get a good scratch! He was evaluated at the clinic and appears to be in good health. Of course he caught a little cold as most shelter residents do, but he took his antibiotics and is fine now.

Adopting an older animal can be very rewarding! CHESTER shows the signs of a street cat that has been denied love and affection. Please consider giving this boy the life of luxury he deserves! Seniors are last on the priority list at the shelter. They don't always "sell themselves" like kittens do! Being in a cage is terrifying to a cat so they often will hide from the intimidation. CHESTER deserves someone with a lot of love to give to a cat in need!

CHESTER is up to date on vaccines and has been neutered. He hasn't been tested for FIV or Leukemia, but we can make arrangements with PACCA to have that test done.

Hopewell Veterinary Hospital Rescuing Pets Stranded After Hurricane Katrina

On October 6, 2005, an animal rescue group brought 10 animals victims of Hurricane Katrina to Hopewell Veterinary Hospital. The 7 dogs and 3 cats were either found outside in the hurricane stricken neighborhoods, taken from shelters, or removed from vacant homes. Hopewell donated space in their facility to house these animals and are taking care of them free of charge. All of the animals were given thorough check-ups and tests were given to check their health and well-being (such as heartworm tests, FIV blood tests, etc.). Since arriving, the animals have been treated for things like fleas, earmites, and heartworms, received their rabbis shots, received any medications they might need, and many have been spayed or neutered free of charge. Many of the animals came in with scrapes and scars, and were scared and curious about their new surroundings, but they are all very friendly and affectionate and have adjusted well and can't wait to find loving homes.

Right now, there are 5 remaining animals up for adoption—2 cats and 3 dogs. Hopewell will continue to donate their space and time to take care of these animals until they find homes for them. Any kind of press generated for this cause would really help in spreading the word and in turn help to find homes for these animals.

Foster Parents Wanted For Felines

Dear PPP Volunteers,
PACCA has several litters of cat/kittens who are in immediate need of foster care. If you can help buy taking some kittens into your home until they are ready for adoption, please email Jasmine at jasmine@pacca.us at your earliest convenience. The People-Pet Partnership www.peoplepetpartnership.com

Help Feral Cats:

Philadelphia Community Cats Council has need for individuals to transport Philadelphia trappers and feral cats (in humane traps) to spay/neuter clinics at PACCA on various Sundays this fall.

You would be providing trappers who do not have their own cars with transportation to PACCA in the early morning, and another ride later in the afternoon to pick up cats after their surgery. Your assistance will help ensure that feral cats are spayed/neutered so that they live longer, healthier lives, and do not contribute to the homeless animal population. If you can help, please send your name, phone number, email address, and the locations from which you could pick up/drop off trappers to Donna Rhoner at phillyferals@animalalliancepa.org.

Help Sick Puppies:

As most of you know, we took in a Heart Worm positive rottie a few weeks ago, and donations paid his hw treatment, except for the follow up visits later on. But then it turned out he had whipworm, hookworm, and erhlichiosis—another more than $200, and also there were 5 emaciated dogs who could not even stand, who spent 5 days in the hospital, and are doing much better.

That was about $1500. Now we had about 15 pups arrive with severe kennel cough, and some had developed into pneumonia. The pups are usually quick to get adopted, and would have helped tremendously with the vet bills, but
instead someone transported them coughing, and according to the vet, the travel would upset their immune system even more, and worsen them. One died within hours of arrival, one is still in the hospital, and one just came home last night. The rest are on medication, but it is touch and go, at such a young age. Another $1200 or so. We have paid about $900 or more so far and another $376 or more is due today when hopefully the little girl is allowed to come home. The vets will not allow any payments. We are in dire need of support in all ways, financially, and physically.

The vets all take Care Credit. So we are really beyond strained right now, as I know everyone is, trying to help with Katrina, and having helped us already. Still, I am sending the plea because we are in such dire straits. Beyond financial support, we can really use short term (2-4 weeks) foster homes for pups or adult, and/or people who are close enough to help me care for the dogs here. It is impossible for one person to nurse and clean and feed this many animals. Healthy puppies for a week til they are adopted is one thing, but now they cannot go to their homes, because except for one who went, the rest had homes with other dogs there, so they cannot take them yet.

So we are appealing to you all to pass this to friends who might have interest, take collections at work, anything that might help. We are in such an urgent situation.

Thanks very much for your continued support.

Cats With Feline Leukemia Need A Home

Bubba and Smokey are two adorable seven-month-old brothers who, unfortunately, were born with feline leukemia. They were recently retested and are still positive, but both are "pictures of health" - frisky, playful, and very, very lovable! They are neutered and have had all their shots. They are in need of a home together. Bubba is a long-haired light gray and white Persian Cross and Smokey is a Russian Blue (see photos at right). If you have no other cats or if you currently have a cat with feline leukemia, won't you consider giving these two precious little fellow a "forever" home? They will return your love thousands of times over! Contact (215) 492-0698 or e-mail anna@bee.net.
