Blind Dog Recovering After 2 Years Of Neglect

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― At the Pennsylvania SPCA, eyes and time tell a lot. You can see dogs brought in so filthy and neglected, they need to be sedated just to be cleaned. Some of the homeless dogs will look you right in the eye, while some avoid your eyes all together.

Then there is Emily, a dog who had been neglected by her owners, is now likely blind and possibly deaf.

"Not socializing her is a completely different form or cruelty that's stunted her for the rest of her life," says Nicole LaRocca, a trainer with the SPCA.

The dog, which has been at the clinic for two weeks, must be carried around because trainers feel she will only feel safe near walls and corners.

When placed outside, the emotionally scarred pup seems uneasy on the soft grass and makes her way to the familiar concrete areas.

These are defects the trainers at the SPCA hope they will one day be able to amend. She will never regain her sight, but it's her animal instincts they hope to restore before finding her a loving home.

"She's just so scared that she just needs somebody to be very kind and quiet to her," said LaRocca.

Emily spent two years locked alone in a dark room. Her owners have been charged with animal cruelty.
