A Philadelphia man facing charges in the murder of his 10-year-old daughter was found dead in his jail cell, police said.
Domingo Ferreira. 53, was found dead inside his cell at the Curran-Fromhold Correction Facility Sunday morning.
Ferreira and his wife, 43-year-old Margarita Garabito, were charged Thursday evening in connection with the death of his 10-year-old daughter, Charleeni.
A family member reportedly told police the girl fell and hit her head Tuesday evening and that she was found unresponsive Wednesday morning.
The young girl was rushed to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead of an apparent brain injury.
An investigation by the medical examiner found Charleeni had numerous injuries, including severe head trauma, several broken bones and injuries to her pelvic region.
Ferreria's father and stepmother were facing charges of murder and endangering the welfare of a child. Sources told CBS3 that the stepmother confessed to the murder.
"This is one of the worst cases I have seen, it's unconscionable to think that someone can do this to a 10-year-old little girl," Capt. Clark said.
According to sources, the Department of Human Services had been alerted in 2007 by school officials of possible abuse; the DHS investigation was discontinued after a doctor certified that she was not being abused.
The investigation is ongoing.
