Residents Call Spring Lake Serene Shore Town

by Kathy Orr
SPRING LAKE, N.J. (CBS 3) ― It's a resort by the sea and by the lake surrounded by stately homes. Bud Benz is a full time shore resident at Spring Lake.

"Just walking the boardwalk or around the lake. It's just a very peaceful town," Benz said.

Two miles of serenity make up Spring Lake's non commercial boardwalk. Long time residents say the shore town some 70 East of Philly was once called the Irish Riviera. It was founded in the late 1800's by Philadelphia business men.

"The spirit is one of very sort of laid back, comfortable," Benz said.

Just blocks from the Ocean Saint Catherine's Church stands lakeside. Built more than one hundred years ago artists from around the world began restoring the painting inside the dome. The job was finished early this year.

"They went up on the top of the scaffolding and they sat for days and days and they just did bit by bit and it took them like three months to complete the dome," Tom Murphy said.

In the meantime, you might find Joe Trainer hunting for buried treasure.

"Lots of watches, found a wedding ring that was worth about $5,000," Trainer said.

There was no digging or lifeguards on duty yet, but they will be during Father's Day weekend when crowds are expected.
