Orr At The Shore: Long Beach Island, N.J.
LONG BEACH ISLAND, N.J. (CBS 3) ―
A unique summer class in Loveladies, N.J. is monitoring the health of the water in Barnegat Bay.
The program is called "Mates" and stands for Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science.
It's a floating classroom in Barnegat Bay. Thursday's assignment for the Ocean County vocational technical students was water testing.
Senior Kyle Barsch tests for turbidity or water clearness.
"With that, you can determine if aquatic vegetation that is on the bottom is getting enough light," Kyle said.
The students in this summer long program regularly monitor pH and oxygen levels, turbidity, currents and water temperature.
The students get their results from an on-board mini-lab.
And all the data that the students collect will be shared with other environmental science groups.
Over years and years of testing, you can start to see trends and find out what type of management programs are actually working," instructor Adam Sprague said.
The Mates program is just one of many activities that is run by the Long Beach Island foundation to promote the arts and sciences on Long Beach Island.
