Lakewood S.W.A.T team members executing a search warrant in a suburban Ocean County, New Jersey neighborhood were met with a hail a bullets Thursday morning. Four officers were shot during the raid.
Deputy Chief Michael Mohel says members of the tactical unit were serving a "no-knock" narcotics and weapons warrant at about 2:25 a.m. at 1125 Mackenzie Court when suspect Jamie Gonzalez allegedly opened fire from atop a staircase.
Authorities say Lakewood Patrolman Jonathan Wilson was shot in the face during the raid, and was in critical but stable condition at an area hospital.
"His injuries are serious, he's in critical condition," said Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford.
Lt. Greg Meyer was shot in the foot, and was transferred another hospital where he would have to undergo surgery. He is reportedly in good condition.
Two other Lakewood officers, Sgt. Louis Sasso and Patrolman Leonard Nieves Sr., were shot in their bulletproof vests, sustaining only minor injuries despite being struck in the chest. They were treated and released from the hospital.
Ford says police returned fire striking Gonzalez, 39, several times. He was taken to a local hospital and was listed in critical, but stable condition.
"We are charging him with four counts of attempted murder, possession of a handgun for unlawful purposes and receiving stolen property," said Ford.
A second person inside the home at the time of the incident was taken into custody, but has not been charged.
Ford confirms a stolen handgun was recovered during the raid, but would not say whether or not drugs were found.
A city official described the incident as "isolated" and said this was the first shooting of an officer in "quite a few years."
Lakewood is located about 35 miles east of Trenton.
