Search For Teen Swimmer Suspended Due To Surf
SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. (CBS 3) ―
The U.S. Coast Guard and New Jersey State Police said they have had to suspend their search for a missing teenage swimmer due to rough surf.
Crew searched the waters off Seaside Heights Thursday for 16-year-old Sal Roberts, who was swept away after being knocked down by heavy surf Wednesday afternoon.
Police said the 16-year-old victim, identified as Sal Roberts of Voorhees, was attending an outing organized by Youth Consultation Services, a nonprofit social services organization.
Roberts was swimming with a second teen when they were knocked over by a large wave around 1 p.m. A lifeguard was able to rescue one teen, but could grab Roberts in time.
"It happened so quickly that he got hit by a very large wave, (it) drove him underneath the water," Seaside Heights Police Chief Thomas Boyd said.
The Coast Guard and New Jersey State Police units assisted lifeguards and local emergency response teams in the search effort. Crews used jet skis and even a human chain at one point to search for teenage swimmer.
Youth Consultation Services President/CEO Richard Mingoia released a statement that read:
"We, at YCS, are all devastated by today's terrible loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with the boy and his family at this time."
