2nd Suspect Charged In Shooting Of 4 Cops

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (AP) ― The second man inside a house when a gun battle broke out and left four police officers wounded has been charged with obstruction.

Ocean County prosecutor's office Deputy Chief Michael Mohel said Edwin Lugo was inside the home early Thursday when Jamie Gonzalez opened fire on a SWAT team that burst in looking for drugs and guns.

Gonzalez and the most seriously wounded officer, patrolman Jonathan Wilson, remained in critical condition Friday.

A search of the house was continuing, but investigators were still concentrating on forensic evidence related to the shooting of the officers and had not begun a concerted search for weapons or drugs related to the warrant they were executing, Mohel said.

Results of that search were not expected to be available until Saturday, he said.

Prosecutors said Lugo lived at the home but gave a fake address to police when he was questioned. Lugo was jailed Friday and couldn't be reached for comment.

Gonzalez, shot several times when police returned fire, is charged with four counts of attempted murder. He couldn't be reached for comment Friday because he was hospitalized.

Authorities say that when a SWAT team broke down the door to the house just before 2:30 a.m. Thursday, he opened fire on them from atop a staircase with a .357 Magnum.

Besides Wilson, another officer suffered bone injuries when he was shot in the foot. Two other officers were hit in their chests but were only slightly injured after their specially reinforced bulletproof vests stopped the slugs from penetrating.

The officers were part of a multi-agency task force executing a no-knock search warrant that had been approved by a judge. They had been investigating drug and gun trafficking.
