Group Files Lawsuit Over NJ Beach Replenishment
LONG BRANCH, N.J. (AP) ―
An environmental group is suing to stop a planned beach replenishment project at the Jersey Shore.
The Surfrider Foundation says the project could place hazardous contaminants on the beaches of Long Branch.
The group's lawsuit, filed in federal court, claims the Army Corps of Engineers hasn't done a chemical study of the sand it will dredge from an area off Sandy Hook and transport to Long Branch.
The suit says that area is in close proximity to several sources of pollution and sewage. It seeks to require the Army Corps of Engineers to conduct another environmental study before it proceeds with the project.
