N.J. Man Admits Role In 5 Bank Robberies

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) ― A New Jersey man has admitted his role in five bank robberies in southern Jersey earlier this year.

Howard Hiles, a 34-year-old Carneys Point resident, faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine after pleading guilty Friday to a bank robbery charge. He will be sentenced Nov.  19.

The robbery Hiles pleaded guilty to occurred April 18 at a Sun National Bank branch in Vineland, where $8,957 was stolen. Hiles said he, his girlfriend and another man planned the robbery, which was done by the two men.

Hiles also admitted committing four additional robberies in May, involving banks in Pennsville, Ocean City and Gloucester and Hopewell townships. He said a portion of the proceeds from each robbery was used to purchase heroin.
