Family Dog On The Mend After Delaware Stabbing

WILMINGTON (CBS 3) ― A Delaware man is in custody after breaking into a Wilmington apartment and repeatedly stabbing a family dog Wednesday evening.

Police were called to the Mill Creek Village Apartments on Scarborough Drive just before 5:30 after a reported break-in.

New Castle County Police spokesman Corporal Trinidad Navarro says Cecil Wright, 45, broke into an apartment and stabbed the dog, named Chopper, when it started barking.

Angela Price, the dog's owner says the incident started when she tried to intervene in a fight Wright was having with his girlfriend outside her apartment. Wright was drunk, Price says, but was trying to take his infant and drive off.

Price says all she offered to do was take the baby while the couple settled their differences.

"He didn't have a car seat, he didn't have anything," Price said. "He accused me of taking his keys, which I did not do."

But when Price returned to her apartment, she says Wright followed her. Police say he came in through an unlocked sliding glass door while Price was in the kitchen.

"He walked in and already had his knife out," Price said.

When Chopper started barking, Price says Wright stabbed him, slicing him in the neck and front leg.

"It was scary," Price said. "There was blood everywhere."

When police arrived, Chopper was rushed to the Windcrest Animal Hospital in Wilmington.

Wright was quickly arrested.

"We did find a pocketknife in his possession covered in blood," said Cpl. Navarro. Police say Wright also had blood on his clothing and was carrying a bag of marijuana.

Wright was arraigned Thursday morning and is facing a number of charges including a felony count of cruelty to animals.

Chopper was treated for multiple stab wounds and is recovering at home. Price says she does not know how she will pay the $2,000 veterinary bill.
