Delaware Air National Guard Going Green

NEW CASTLE, Del. (AP) ― A $1.1 million project to install solar panels on Delaware Air National Guard buildings is making progress.

Federal money and the state's Green Energy Fund are paying more than 60 percent of the cost.

The guard spends about $1,500 a day in utilities for several buildings near New Castle County Airport. To cut that, solar panels have been installed on the Squadron Operations Center, the medical building and the fire house.

Panels are also planned on a new hangar under construction and other buildings.

The base also installed 61 solar lights to replace traditional outdoor lights and added more efficient indoor lighting set to timers or motion detectors to reduce consumption. The base uses geothermal heating and cooling to control the temperature of buildings.
