Delaware DMV Aiding Collection Of Unpaid Fines
WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) ―
Delaware's Division of Motor Vehicles is helping Wilmington collect $14 million in fines for parking and speeding tickets and other violations.
Those with overdue fines won't be able to register their vehicles until they have paid up.
The city will get 65 percent of money collected, the state will get 27 percent and the company that manages the red-light camera program for the city will get 8 percent.
DMV Director Jennifer Cohan says a pilot program will go after a random group of delinquents in the next two months and the full-scale effort will begin in January.
The city tried before to get the state to put a hold on vehicle registrations, but the poor economy helped convince state officials to participate.
