Delaware Spending Stimulus Funds "Intelligently"

(AP) A Minnesota lawmaker overseeing the federal stimulus program says Delaware needs to spend the money faster.

But Lt. Gov. Matt Denn, who's managing Delaware's stimulus spending, says the state will "spend it intelligently" because it will only get the money once.

Rep. James Oberstar contacted state officials after learning Delaware is the second-slowest state in the nation, behind Virginia, spending only 27 percent of its stimulus-funded transportation money through August.

Gov. Jack Markell says state transportation officials are using the money to help the economy over the long term. He says that's more important than "hastily spending the money on less worthy projects."

Moody's Economy.com senior economist John Stapleford says Delaware's approach is wise.
