Funeral Held For Delaware Bishop Saltarelli

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) ― Hundreds of people have gathered to pay their final respects to the former head of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington.

Bishop Michael Saltarelli died of bone cancer last week. He was 77. Saltarelli had led the diocese of 230,000 Catholics in Delaware and Maryland's Eastern Shore from 1996 until last year.

Bishop John Barres of Allentown, Pa., delivered the homily at Saltarelli's funeral Wednesday. Barres described him as "a priest's priest, a bishop's bishop, and a people's bishop."

Mourners John and Ann Carney said Saltarelli did a good job leading the diocese through difficult times, which included the clergy sex abuse scandal. Saltarelli often apologized to victims of sex abuse by priests and said church leaders should have dealt with the issue decades earlier.
