Rare Copy Of 13th Amendment On Display In Philly

The National Constitution Center in Philadelphia is marking Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday by displaying a rare copy of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on Sept. 23, 1862, freeing all slaves in those states still in rebellion against the United States as of Jan. 1, 1863. It was not until December 1865, however, that slavery was finally abolished under the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution.
Of the 14 known copies of the amendment signed by Lincoln, the National Constitution Center's is one of only seven also signed by the vice president, the House speaker, and the 37 senators and 114 congressmen who voted to abolish slavery.
