Diana: Her Younger Brother Speaks
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Her life was sometimes charmed, sometimes tragic. Now all of it is being remembered at an exhibit celebrating Princess Diana at the National Constitution Center. Susan Barnett sat down with one of the people who knew her best, her brother Charles Spencer.
The star of the show? The wedding dress.
"Yes, this is the show stopper, really," said Charles Spencer, "People say, 'Oh, is this the original dress?'"
It is the one and only wedding dress worn by Princess Diana in 1981 when she walked down the aisle to marry her prince. That's the day her younger brother noticed the beautiful princess the world would come to love.
"The morning of her wedding, before she'd left for the ceremony, she was all made up and she looked really stunning. And I remember thinking, 'I've got a beautiful sister,' because as a younger brother, you don't really notice that sort of thing," Spencer said.
Spencer helped choose some of the items that appear in this exhibit, including the tribute he wrote himself to deliver at Diana's funeral in Westminster Abbey in 1997.
Some of the money this exhibit raises will go to causes very much unlike her glamorous, well-dressed life, like helping families of prisoners.
"They're difficult causes," said Spencer, "and they are things that don't get a lot of money otherwise."
Spencer hopes this exhibit inspires others to give.
"I think she would be pleased that it exists, and I think she would be amazed it has such following," said Spencer.
From October 2 through December 31, 2009, the National Constitution Center will host Diana: A Celebration.
