Handgun Found On Departing Flight In Philadelphia
US Airways Employee, Passenger In Custody
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ―
Two people are now in police custody after a handgun was found on a Philadelphia flight bound for Arizona.
A witness apparently notified TSA officials after spotting a passenger hand a bag to an U.S. Airways employee at Philadelphia International Airport early Thursday morning, reports CBS station KYW-TV in Phiadelphia.
Authorities stopped U.S. Airways Flight 1195 as it began its departure from the airport.
Investigators located the carry-on bag in question on board and found an unloaded 9mm handgun along with ammunition inside. A passenger and a U.S. Airways employee were taken in for questioning.
Passengers were taken off the flight and rescreened as a precaution. Sources tell Eyewitness News during that second screening a box cutter was also found which had cleared the initial screening.
The flight, originally scheduled to depart at 7:10 a.m., was cleared to leave at about 10:55 a.m. It has since landed at the Phoenix airport.
FBI officials said the incident is isolated. The FBI, Philadelphia Police and TSA are investigating.
