An adviser to the U.S. military is quoted as saying British troops are facing an "ugly and embarrassing" withdrawal from southern Iraq in the coming months.
Stephen Biddle tells the Sunday Times that insurgents and militia groups will probably target the British soldiers with ambushes, roadside bombs and rocket-propelled grenades as they leave. He says the insurgents "want the image of a British defeat."
A British defense analyst says it's becoming intolerable for British troops in southern Iraq, with every mission facing an ambush.
An Iraqi journalist says British forces there have been faced with daily shelling and the loss of more than 150 troops in Basra.
The Sunday Times quotes a senior British officer as saying British troops have lost control of that city. He's quoted as saying that the insurgents there are "calling the shots." And he says in a "worst-case scenario," they'll "chase us out of southern Iraq."
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said he will withhold a withdrawal decision until after Gen. David Petraeus issues a report in September on the progress of the U.S. troop surge.
