If you are looking for a salty snack and a cheap trip, one of the area's most famous chip makers will have you saying, "Let's Go
Cheap!"
Tucked away in Nottingham, Chester County is the Herr's snack factory. Ed Herr said his father started the company back in 1946.
"He cooked the chips by hand during the day and then he would pick up my mother, who was his fiancée at the time, and the he would sell the chips door to door in Lancaster," Herr said.
Today they make 5 to 6 tons of product a day and you can see how they do it for free.
The Herr's Factory Tour is interesting, fun, educational and the real deal. Other tours may set up mock equipment, but at Herr's you get to see the factory at work.
Visitors will see how the chips are seasoned, packaged and shipped in Herr's own trucks. The tour is free and everyone is treated to hot chips
"They are awesome! Freshest chip I've ever had hot off the line," said one visitor.
"We believe that if people take time out of their schedule to come visit us, we want to treat them like royalty and we think that there's a marketing value to us for doing that," Herr said.
The factory is located in Nottingham, Pa., approximately about an hour from Philadelphia. Tours are held Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. then 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. On Fridays, tours run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
