Winter Weather To Wallop Region Again

PHILADELPHIA (CBS3/AP) ― Another huge snowstorm is expected to smack the Philadelphia area and make it the snowiest winter on record in the city.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening for most of the Delaware Valley.

Forecasters are predicting the major winter storm will roll into the mid-Atlantic Tuesday evening, socking the Philadelphia region with its third big snowfall since the start of December.

The snow is expected to begin between 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday evening and will be heavy at times during the day on Wednesday.

After more than 28 inches fell in Philadelphia over the weekend, the National Weather Service is predicting snowfall of 18 inches to 24 inches for the upcoming storm.

The Philadelphia region and its surrounding suburbs, as well as interior New Jersey and Delaware, are expected to see between 12 to 24 inches of snow. The Poconos and southern parts of New Jersey can expect between 6 to 12 inches.

An accumulation of more than 9.2 inches would make this winter the snowiest on record in Philadelphia. Philadelphia's official climate record currently stands at 56.3" of snow for the season. This snowfall will likely break the record of 65.5" that was set during the 1995-1996 season.

PennDOT has been applying a salt brine solution to area roadways and they are trying to remove snow already on the ground.

Many are still digging out after the weekend storm that dropped 28 1/2 inches of snow in Philadelphia, the second largest snowfall in city history.

"Whatever comes down, we're going to deal with it," Mayor Nutter said.

Shoppers have been stocking up on essentials, like milk and eggs, in advance of the pending storm. Employees at the Whole Foods at 20th and Callowhill said the crowds are growing as the day progresses.
