Wayward Dolphins Still Swimming In N.J.

HIGHLANDS, N.J. (AP) ― If some of New Jersey's wayward dolphins have made it out of two rivers and back out to sea, it's not very many.

Nine dolphins were spotted in the waterways Tuesday, 5 in the Navesink and 4 in the Shrewsbury rivers. Earlier this fall, there were 12.

On Monday, animal rescuers voiced cautious optimism that at least some of the dolphins made it underneath a bridge undergoing noisy repair work and back out to sea. That hope was based on observations of the dolphins Saturday in the Shrewsbury River when it appeared that they were trying to go under the Route 36 bridge between Sea Bright and Highlands.
