Philadelphia Zoo Debuts Rare Sumatran Orangutan

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― A rare Sumatran orangutan born in October made his debut Thursday at the Philadelphia Zoo.

The baby boy orangutan was born October 2, 2009 to 16-year old Tua and her mate, Sugi.

According to the zoo, "The newborn is the first orangutan born in PECO Primate Reserve, continuing the Zoo's orangutan breeding success which dates back to the 1920's, when the Zoo was the first in the U.S. to successfully breed orangutans."

Zoo officials say Sumatran orangutans are endangered in the wild due to habitat destruction through their Footprints Program they have partnered with the Kinabatangan Forest Restoration Project to plant new habitats in Borneo.
