Suspect Arrested After South Jersey Motel Standoff

BORDENTOWN Twp., N.J. (AP) ― New Jersey State Police say a man wanted on an attempted murder charge in Maryland has surrendered after a standoff at a south Jersey motel.

Sgt. Stephen Jones says the charges against Nicholas Hipley stem from a fight that involved an edged weapon.

The standoff began around 6 p.m. Wednesday after police learned the Perry Hall, Md., resident was staying with his wife at the Econo Lodge on Route 130 in Bordentown Township.

Jones says the wife told authorities her husband was alone in the room and armed with a 12-gauge shotgun.

Jones says two blasts from the gun were heard during the standoff, but no one was injured.

A police negotiator talked to Hipley, who surrendered around 2 a.m. Thursday.
