Smallest N.J. School Districts To Be Merged
HADDONFIELD, N.J. (AP) ―
New Jersey's smallest school districts are going the way of the dinosaur.
Gov. Jon Corzine Tuesday signed into law a bill that will clear the way to merge 25 small school districts that do not operate schools with larger districts.
The districts include tiny towns like Teterboro, Tavistock, Hi-Nella and Rocky Hill. Their school boards usually meet just once a year to approve sending a tuition check to a neighboring district.
New Jersey's 616 school districts are often cited as wasteful. But the little districts say they're not a problem because they don't incur many costs.
Under a 2007 law, the state called to eliminate the tiny districts by last year. But complications over taxes slowed the process. The new law is meant to clarify it.
