Desperately Seeking Marty

Jeff Kolakowski
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ― So, why can't us?

A question so Philadelphian, so perfectly put, and so grammatically incorrect!

It was after 9 a.m. Thursday, Phillies fans where under the influence of ruining Major League Baseball's dream match up; Manny Ramirez and Joe Torre's return to Boston to play the Sox in the World Series (the latter half then ruined by Tampa).

A late night win by the Phils in LA had fans up late or up early or just up all night, and you could see it on fans faces and hear it in fans voices.

Thursday, October 16th, 9:10 a.m. XM Radio National Broadcast

The caller, Marty from Delaware, a Phils fan, who called in to "Baseball this Morning" on MLB home plate, hosted by Chuck Wilson and Jim Duquette.

The host asks, "So what about the possibility of a World Series in Philadelphia?"

Marty from Delaware responds, "25 years without a major championship in Philly. Boston did it. The White Sox did it. Why can't us? Why can't us for once?"

The response made its way from word of mouth to word of web, so much so that Dan Levy who writes for the700level.com, decided that this could be our rallying cry, our ode to 100 season's of not finishing first.

He has been selling t-shirts and other merchandise with the phrase on "whycant.us," proceeds of which go to ALS research, the Phillies charity.

Three words incorrectly strung together, but possibly a perfect summary of all of the joy and the passion and the pain release that getting into the World Series brought.

After all, how can you summarize decades of emotion and elation into a sentence?

Marty from Delaware did.
