Phillies Fan Flees Game With World Series Rings

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― A New Jersey man has been arrested after allegedly stealing World Series rings from the Philadelphia Phillies executive office.

Police say the man allegedly stole the rings Thursday after being ejected from Game 2 of the playoffs.

The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Matthew Mervine of Berlin, was in the offices to apply for a job when he swiped the three rings that were in a manila envelope on the counter in the lobby.

"Captured on video in fact is the theft of that envelope," said Philadelphia Police Captain Laurence Nodiff.

Police then caught another break when they realized their suspect had completed a job application before leaving the scene of the crime.

"He filled out the application and put down his actual name, actual address and his phone number," said Capt. Nodiff.

The surveillance video and application led police directly to Mervine who was arrested hours later.

This theft marked the second time since September that a Phillies World Series ring was stolen from the ballpark. In the first incident, janitor Anthony Moble, 53, was arrested.

Mervine has been charged with theft and receiving stolen property and is being held by Berlin Borough Police.
