Philadelphia Considers Parking Space Sensors

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ― Finding an on-street parking space may become easier for drivers in downtown Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Parking Authority is looking at wireless sensors that could be installed at parking meters.

The sensors would detect when a parking space is open and would relay that information to a Web site.

Parking Authority planning director Rick Dickson a driver could access a list of the sites in a desired area by using a cell phone or a PDA.

San Francisco is in the midst of a major test of the technology. Dickson says the Philadelphia Parking Authority has already contacted vendors but there's no firm decision to move forward.
