Runners Lacing Up For The Philadelphia Marathon
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Thousands of runners are lacing up for the 16th annual Philadelphia Marathon this weekend.
Approximately 20,000 runners are set to hit the scenic streets of Philadelphia at 7 a.m. Sunday.
Officials said 10,000 participants will take part in the relatively flat, 26.2 mile course that runs through Center City, the historic district, along the river in to Manayunk and into University City.
An additional 8,000 runners will be involved in a half marathon and 2,000 will run an 8k.
As the city gets prepared for the race, it is also ready for an economic boost of $10 million. Currently, the marathon is limited to just 20,000 runners, but Mayor Nutter hopes to expand in the future.
"We're more than prepared to take a look at how to we take this race to the next level. We want to do it well, we want to do it right and we always want the runners to have a good experience," he said.
CBS 3 and the CW Philly are proud media sponsors of the Philadelphia Marathon.
