Center City Parking Meter Rates Increase
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
You now need a few more quarters to park on the streets of Philadelphia.
City Council approved Mayor Nutter's proposal to raise rates from $1 to $2 an hour in Center City and to $1.50 in University City.
The rate increases are part of a plan to ease downtown congestion.
Officials said the goal is not new revenue but to keep people from "circling around looking for a $1-an-hour parking" on the street.
While the increase may raise concerns for some drivers, Nutter said it is still cheaper than city garages.
"You can park on the streets of Philadelphia for an hour for a dollar and it's $3.15, $3.25, $3.50 for 15 minutes in a parking lot," Mayor Nutter explained.
