Man Found Not Guilty In Newsstand Thefts
PHILADELPHIA (AP) ―
A jury has found a Philadelphia
man not guilty of stealing five newspaper stands in broad daylight with the help
of a crane.
Forty-four-year-old Fatai King said he was "glad
that it's over" when the jury returned its verdict on Thursday afternoon.
He says it was due to a "misunderstanding" at Philadelphia's Department
of Licenses and Inspections.
King testified during his trial that L&I
officials gave him permission to move the structures in April 2006 because they
were abandoned. But a city inspector testified that she met with King several
times and she denied that permission was granted.
King says L&I deleted his name from their
computer, so they did not have the number of his money order, his license
number or the receipt they issued him.
