Cape May Beaches Reopen After Waste Find
CAPE MAY (CBS 3) ―
Beaches in Cape May County have been reopened after the discovery of medical waste Thursday.
Beach Patrol members discovered three needles while doing a sweep of the shore in Cape May during the morning hours.
As a precaution, beaches at Queen Street, Stockton Avenue and Grant Street were closed. Police said the beaches were reopened just before 3:30 p.m.
Officials said the needles appear to be the type often used to deliver insulin.
While it is not believe to be connected, the find is the latest in a series of medical waste finds up and down the Jersey shore.
Beaches in Brigantine were closed for several hours Wednesday after a beachgoer found medical debris on the tideline. In Atlantic City, officials discovered approximately 100 unopened needles scattered underneath the Steel City Pier, but beaches were not closed.
The drama began after Avalon beaches were plagued by a series of closures after medical waste was found washing up on the shoreline. Police are currently questioning a Main Line dentist in connection with the Avalon incidents.
All of the incidents remain under investigation.
