Nutter: Use Mass Transit To Games This Weekend

With 3 Major Events On Sunday, Traffic Will Be A Mess

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― There are several high profile entertainment events planned for this weekend, including games 3 and 4 of the World Series, and Mayor Michael Nutter is urging the people of Philadelphia to celebrate with caution and utilize mass transit.

Sporting a Phillies hat and a big smile to welcome the players back from Tampa with a split in the World Series, Mayor Nutter was on hand to announce lucky winners of a free ticket giveaway and display the World Series Trophy.

He also made brief comments about the need to celebrate carefully over the busy weekend.

"Sunday is going to be a particularly challenging day for those traveling to the sports complex," said Mayor Nutter. "The Eagles are at home and there's a concert that night, so the stadium area will be tremendously crowded with enthusiastic fans."

On Saturday, the Flyers play the Devils at 4 p.m. at the Wachovia Center. At 8 p.m., Celtic Thunder takes over the Wachovia Spectrum. And the Phils play Game 3 of the World Series at Citizens Bank Park at 8 p.m.

On Sunday, the Eagles will take on the Atlanta Falcons at 1 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field. Legendary rockers The Who will perform live at the Wachovia Center at 7:30 p.m. and the Phillies will take on the Rays in game 3 of the World Series at 8 p.m.

Needless to say, transportation will be a major problem in and around the stadium complex the entire weekend. The Mayor, along with SEPTA officials, is urging fans to utilize public transportation.

"We are actively, strongly, passionately encouraging all Philadelphians and those in the region, anyone who is interested in going to the South Philadelphia sports complex for whatever you want to go down there for, please take mass transit," urged the Mayor.

SEPTA and the parking authority will increase their schedules and availability in anticipation of the huge crowds descending on South Philadelphia.

SEPTA will offer extra service on the Broad Street subway with special express trains from the Fern Rock station every 10 minutes; in addition they will ramp up service on the El and regional rails up to one hour after the Phillies game ends Sunday evening.

SEPTA is also teaming up with the parking authorities to offer a special deal which entails a $5 flat rate to park at various locations along Broad Street. The deal only applies to the purchase of round trip rail tickets for the Broad Street line to the complex.

PARKING LOCATIONS:
- 15th Street & Arch Street
- 16th Street & Arch Street
- 15th Street & Vine Street
- 10th Street & Filbert Street
- 10th Street & Ludlow Street
- The Parking Authority garages (Broad & Race, Broad & Wood and Broad & Callowhill)
