Nutter Flips Coin At Philly Women's Football Game

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter was tapped for a special honor Saturday evening.

The honorable mayor preformed the official coin toss for the start of the Philadelphia Firebirds Saturday night game, the Firebirds are Philadelphia's first all women, full contact, tackle football team.

Part of the Independent Women's Football League, a national league comprising of over1600 women playing on 40 teams throughout the United States and Canada, The Firebirds were undefeated during their 2008 campaign.

In their eighth season in the IWFL, the Firebirds, originally known as the Phoenix, took on the DC Diva's under the stadium lights. Home games will continue to be played at the Benjamin Johnston Memorial Stadium at 1000 E. Sedgwick St in the West Oak Lane of the city.

Philadelphia's own recording star, Jaguar Wright sang the National Anthem to kick things off.
