Large Marijuana Bust Made In Germantown

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Philadelphia Police discovered a large amount of marijuana in the Germantown section of the city early Friday morning.

Officers were responding to a call of a reported robbery on the 5900 block of North Beachwood Street shortly before 4 a.m. when they found packaged quantities of pot.

Authorities said the drugs carried a street value of $700,000.

"They probably have about, like I said, 250 plants in there. They've got an irrigation system in there. They have chemicals, root enhancers. They have air conditioning system to keep the temperature at a certain temperature," Philadelphia Police Inspector Robert Snyder said.

Police said the operation was very sophisticated and very dangerous and temperatures in the drying areas could get near 100 degrees. There were also illegal electrical hookups.

"They're growing in stages. There are small plants on the first floor, larger plants on the second floor and the bigger plants are on the third floor. There is a drying area where you can dry them out at. It's a really elaborate situation," Snyder said.

Three people were taken in to the 35th police district for questioning and they are facing a laundry list of drug charges.

The incident remains under investigation.
