A former Philadelphia police officer will spend 30 years in prison for using his gun and badge to rob a drug kingpin of $40,000 and taking part in a home-invasion robbery.
A federal judge called 37-year-old Malik Snell's crimes "incomprehensible" given his service in the Marines and police department.
Snell's father suggested a gambling problem prompted the crime spree.
Snell robbed the drug dealer during a traffic stop and participated in the home invasion in Pottstown. He also caused a high-speed crash there that left a nurse permanently injured.
U.S. District Judge R. Barclay Surrick says Snell perjured himself throughout three trials, two of which ended with deadlocked juries. His sentence denies Snell's request to get out and help raise his four children.
