Farnese Gets Surprise Win In First District Race

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Center City lawyer Larry Farnese beat the odds to take the Democratic nomination for the state senate seat in Pennsylvania's first district Tuesday night.

Farnese had a commanding win with 43 percent of the vote with union leader John Dougherty coming in a distant second with 38 percent. Anne Dicker was a distant third, taking 19 percent.

Senator Vince Fumo, who held the first district seat for over 30 years, joined the Farnese's celebration.

"Tonight this city took five steps forward," Farnese said. "Harrisburg will be reformed, this city will be reformed."

Dougherty, who was considered a favorite in the race, was reluctant to concede.

"We're stuck between third base and home in the bottom of the 9th," he said. "I want to thank Larry, it looks like he'll be our candidate in the general election."

Farnese said he is confident moving forward towards November.
