Philadelphia Police area searching for the heartless thief who stole a baby Jesus statue from a Nativity scene display on Independence Mall over the weekend.
The small statue was believed to be taken from the scene on the corner of 5th and Market Streets late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.
An electrician installing lights Sunday morning noticed the baby Jesus statue and his crib were missing.
It was not immediately known if security cameras placed around Independence Mall captured the crime.
The Nativity scene has been vandalized in years past, but organizers feel it is important to keep the symbolic statues on display for the holiday season.
A replacement baby Jesus was in place Monday afternoon for a scheduled dedication ceremony.
The volunteers who maintain the display said they intend to purchase a new baby Jesus statue that will be displayed only on Christmas Day.
If anyone has information regarding the stolen statue, you are urged to contact the Philadelphia Police.
