Philadelphia Police are honoring a fellow officer killed in the line of duty nearly 80 years ago with the dedication of a Hero Plaque Wednesday.
Officer Joseph Bell was shot in the stomach after confronting a suspicious man ringing doorbells on the 2100 block of Lombard Street on December 11, 1926. The 33-year-old officer died of his injuries on December 23.
The suspect was identified as a man on parole for a prior murder.
A plaque honoring Bell's sacrifice, sponsored by the Philadelphia 76ers, was placed near Lombard and Van Pelt Streets.
Bell's death is frighteningly similar to the recent murder of Highway Patrol Sergeant Patrick McDonald on September 23. McDonald was shot and killed after a traffic stop involving a suspect wanted for violating his parole and assaulting several officers.
The Fraternal Order of Police has called for a review of the judicial and parole system in the wake of the tragic shooting.
