Stolen Donated Chicken Partially Saved

NEWARK (CBS 3) ― Food Bank of Delaware officials are trying to determine if tens of thousands of pounds of chicken stolen over the weekend is still edible.

Delaware State Police said two trailers stolen from the Food Bank of Delaware were recovered in Jersey City Wednesday morning.

A tip call led authorities to the trucks at about 3 a.m.

The trailers, which contained 53,000 pounds of donated chicken, were taken from the Food Bank's Newark, Delaware location Saturday evening.

After the trailers were returned to New Castle County Wednesday, officials determined food in one of the trailers was unsalvageable while food in the second trailer could possibly be saved.

Workers are expected to begin unloading both trailers Thursday morning.

No arrests have been made in the thefts. The incident remains under investigation.

The Food Bank distributes approximately 10 million pounds of food a year to Delaware's poor.
