A suspect surrendered to authorities Thursday in connection to a hit and run accident that claimed the life of a Delaware County teenager in August.
Faith Sinclair, 16, was crossing the street near Chester Pike and Laurel Road in Sharon Hill when she was struck by a vehicle the evening of August 3. The driver did not stop.
The alleged driver has been identified as Lemuel Payne, 26, who surrendered to police Thursday to face charges of leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in a death or injury, tampering with evidence, failure to render assistance and failure to notify the police.
On August 7, investigators seized Payne's 2000 black Mercedes from a garage at his home in the 300 block of State Road in Upper Darby.
Payne allegedly called his boss within hours after the accident and told him he would not be in work because he had been involved in a fatal accident involving a young girl. It is those words that helped police narrow down their search and after two months of investigation and a Grand Jury indictment, he was finally charged with the crime that left Sinclair, an honor student at Ridley High School, dead.
Payne was arraigned before District Judge Gannon in Sharon Hill on Thursday.
