Helpful Heat Resources

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― It's going to be a hot one. An excessive heat warning went into effect at noon Friday as temperatures rose into the upper 90s throughout the region.

Area residents are warned to find a place to cool off as the third heat wave of the season sends the mercury soaring.

Temperatures are expected to hit the upper 90s in Philadelphia. Combined with the humidity, it could feel well into the 100s.

Philadelphia officials have canceled all summer schools and programs for the day. The city Heatline (215-765-9040) has been activated, with operators on hand to answer heat related questions.

In hopes of preventing possible tragedy, the Philadelphia Senior Center handed out hundreds of free fans to the elderly Thursday.

Officials are also warning residents to be aware of the signs of heat stroke, which include having a headache, confusion and nausea. Those most at risk during the intense temperatures are the elderly and the sick.

If you do not have access to air conditioning in your home, head to a nearby mall or spend a few hours at the movies. Also, do not forget about your pets in the hot weather.

The hot weather is expected to extend throughout the weekend.
