Drivers Encouraged To 'Dump The Pump'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Drivers are being encouraged to leave their cars at home and hop on public transportation to save on gas during national "Dump the Pump" day.

The nationwide-initiative aims at helping people save money while saving the environment by finding alternative transportation.

PATCO joined nearly 100 public transportation systems across the country for the all-day long event to raise awareness.

"Get people out of their cars and using public transportation," said Bob Box with PATCO. "This $4 a gallon gasoline is what's been driving people to public transportation."

Since the rise in gas prices, PATCO has seen ridership increase 7 percent and SEPTA has seen a 5 percent jump since last year.

Parking lots were packed Thursday with drivers who decided to "Dump the Pump."

"It was costing me about $500 a month to drive. I'm saving about $400 by taking public transportation," said New Jersey resident Bill Headington.

Organizers hope the event will leave a lasting impression on drivers.
